Excessive sweating is a common problem faced by millions of people every year. Many find themselves sweating uncontrollably even upon completing minor tasks. They often sweat unpredictably and even when the temperature is cool. If you have similar experiences then you realize that this can be utterly frustrating. However, there are several treatment options available to you. This article will introduce you to some of the more popular treatments to help you get rid of excessive sweating.

1. Antiperspirants

The first line of treatment includes antiperspirants, which as opposed to deodorants, actually helps to prevent sweating as well as reduce odors. The active ingredient in antiperspirants is aluminum chloride hexahydrate. Doctors may prescribe products with a higher dosage of this if need be. However, you should be warned that aluminum chloride may cause skin irritation and may also damage clothing.

2. Medications

Prescription medications such as glycopyrrolate are available. These work by preventing the stimulation of the sweat glands. While these are effective for some, it does some have some side effects like dizziness and dry mouth.

3. Iontophoresis

This treatment uses electricity to temporarily turn off your sweat glands; however, this option is more suited towards the hands and feet. The hands and feet are placed in water while a gentle electric current passes through it. Sessions may last about 20 minutes and some minor side effects such as skin cracking and blisters may occur, but are very rare.

4. Botox

Botox can be used for severe underarm sweating. Several doses of purified botulinum toxin is injected into the underarm area blocking the nerves that stimulate sweating. Botox injections may also be used in other areas to treat excessive sweating, but this can be rather painful and may also cause temporary weakness.

5. Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS)

ETS is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that essentially involves cutting off the signal that tells your body to sweat excessively. The surgeon locates the nerve that is responsible for the over active sweat gland and removes it. The surgery takes about 30 minutes and the patient is usually released the next day.
